Creating effective and inviting displays can be a time-consuming chore. Here are 10 easy-to-follow display suggestions from Pat Hill and Marilyn Thomsen of Antique Wicker and Gifts.

Follow seasonal themes. Make sure each season is highlighted in your store and key displays are decked out with products from whatever festive occasion may be at hand.

Use products wisely. Don't just set a bunch of products on a shelf. Use the products together to create a small scene or to illustrate the items' versatility.  If you have a bunch of baskets, fill them with items. If you carry collectibles, fill an antique cabinet with them instead of simply setting them on some glass shelves.

Color coordinate. Make the colors in your display and products flow from one display to the next. Don't set a bunch of warm wood antique furniture filled with candles and lamps next to a display filled with electric-green children's themed items.

Strive for originality. Make displays unusual. Show the customers something they have never seen before. Set a dining room table scene outdoors filled with products from your store (just for the day of course). Or bring a garden scene indoors full of fake trees and scattered with Christmas lights. Set the stage for the customer.
Plan easy access. Customers can't buy if they can't shop. Make your display areas easy to shop. Try to think of every situation: mothers with children, shoppers with large or oversized packages and so on.
Show off those one-of-a-kind items. Don't be afraid to put a specialty item out into a display but remember to highlight it. Center other items around a large antique hutch or use an oversized beeskep to show off spring and summer specialty foods.  One thing to remember, however, always be prepared to sell the item.

Scatter favorite items. If you have an abundance of woven napkins, don't keep them all in one central place. Drape a few throughout the store. Items like these add color and diversification.

Use everything. If you sell lamps, light them. If you have food, serve it. If you sell dishes and flatware, set them out on a table. Don't let items simply sit on a shelf. Make them do something.

Follow your theme. Each store has a certain ambiance regular customers come to love. Meet those expectations. A store that sells casual country gifts should follow a casual country motif. A store that sells contemporary gifts should follow a similar decor.

Open every door. Don't let products with doors, drawers or any other kind of appendage go unused. Fill them or drape them.
